The State of Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety has offered the Sparks Police Department a grant in the amount of $11,000 to pay for officer overtime costs to allow the Sparks Police Department to participate in the 2020 Regional School Zone Safety Initiative. This program includes nine (9) special trafic enforcement events in school zones occurring over the course of the 2020-2021 academic year.
Background:
The Regional School Safety Initiative is a coordinated effort between the Sparks Police Department, Reno Police Department, Nevada Highway Patrol, and Washoe County School District Police Department to increase enforcement and education efforts for both pedestrians and drivers in Washoe County's school zones. The goals of the project are to reduce the number of crashes involving Washoe County School District students as they go to and from school, and to eliminate student fatalaties due to vehicle collisons while walking to or from school.
Analysis:
The $11,000 grant will pay for approximately 200 hours of officer overtime to conduct cooperative and increased traffic enforcement in school zones.
Alternatives:
The Council can elect to reject the Regional School Safety Zone Initiative grant award in the amount of $11,000 and seek funding elsewhere.
Recommended Motion:
I move to accept the $11,000 grant (AC-5693) from the State of Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety to participate in the Regional School Zone Initiative.
