Agenda Item Brief: The State of Nevada Division of Child and Family Services has made available $9000.00 to the Sparks Police Department to reduce underage drinking by conducting alcohol sale compliance checks, controlled juvenile party dispersal and special event control.
Background: Incidences of minors possessing and consuming alcoholic beverages for the last 10 years have increased. Officers conduct enforcement activities that include alcohol sale compliance checks at local businesses that posses a liquor license, controlled juvenile party dispersals, and special events control where juveniles gather and are known to consume alcoholic beverages. Minimizing and eliminating opportunities for minors to purchase alcohol or to consume alcohol illegally would impact incidences of impaired driving, disturbances, and acts of violence within the city. Parties cited or arrested for related underage drinking violations would be held accountable for their actions by the local juvenile and municipal court system. Should the City Council elect not to accept the grant funds, targeted enforcement of underage drinking laws would not occur and the police department would have minimal impact on a growing problem involving our youth.
Analysis: By accepting the donation in the amount of $9000.00, the Sparks Police Department will be able to conduct alcohol sale compliance checks as well as other law enforcement operations to reduce underage drinking.

Recommended Motion: I recommend a motion to accept the State of Nevada Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws Grant donation in the amount of $9000.00.
