Agenda Item Brief: This agreement will provide for the distribution of Justice Assistance Grant funds from the United States Department of Justice, Office of Justice Assistance and designate the City of Reno as the fiscal agent for the grant.
Background: The United States Department of Justice has a justice assistance grant program that provides jurisdictions with grant funds for the puropse of meeting the needs of the criminal justice agency. The funding available is based upon a "formula" that considers a jurisdiction's population. The City of Reno, City of Sparks and Washoe County jointly apply for this grant on an annual basis. The amount of funds by making a joint application is greater than what the City of Sparks would recieve with an individual application. The division of grant funds agreed to by the entities provides a 40%-40%-20% split of funds to the City of Reno, Washoe County and the City of Sparks respectively. This division of funds is the same as in previous years.
Analysis: The grant funds will provide $28,951.00 that the Police Department will use for equipment purchases and officer training.
Alternatives: The City can seek funding elsewhere to meet it's training and equipment needs.
Recommended Motion: Accept the United States Department of Justice, Justice Assistance Grant and the interlocal agreement with the City of Reno and Washoe County to delegate how the funds are to be distributed.
