Agenda Item Brief: The Sparks Police Department applied for and has been offered a Justice Assistance Grant from the State of Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Criminal Justice Assistance in the amount of $10,000 to help pay for specialized police training. That training is for officers involved in the investigation of child abuse cases.

Background: Officers who investigate child abuse cases are required to have specialized training by NRS 432B.620. Typically a law enforcement agency would spend $3,000 to $5,000 dollars to send an officer to a training facility out of state to recieve that education. The Sparks Police Department along with the Reno Police Department, the Washoe County Sherriff's Office and other area agencies that investigate child abuse all have a need to train additional personnel in this area. In order to conserve funds, a provider of that training, the National Child Advocacy Center was contacted and has agreed to provide that training locally at a cost that is a fraction of what would be needed to sent students to their facility. The total cost for the one week class is $12,000. The class will be held at the Regional Public Safety Training Center in Reno. To help reduce the financial burden to the agencies, the Sparks Police Deparmtent applied for and has been offered a Justice Assistance Grant for training from the State of Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Criminal Justice Assistance. The maximum award is $10,000 and that is the amount being offered. The remaining $2,000 required to pay for the training will be split among the three agencies.

Analysis: By brining the trainers to our location, the Sparks Police Department, who needs to train two investigators, will save approximately $5,400. Additional personnel may be able to attend the training as it will be local and this will provide for future savings.

Alternatives: The Police Department can seek funding elsewhere for this required expense.

Recommended Motion: Accept the Justice Assistance Grant in the amount of $10,000 to provide specialized police training.
