Agenda Item Brief: Domestic violence training is being offered in San Antonio, Texas and the State of Nevada has offered grant money to agencies in the State of Nevada to attend the conference.
Background: Since the downturn in the economy and resulting deep budget cuts, the City Attorney's Office has had to find more cost-effective ways to obtain training; or to just go without. The State of Nevada has offered grant monies to agencies wishing to attend training in San Antonio, Texas entitled "2012 Domestic Violence Dangers & Risk Assessment". Our Victim Advocate and one Prosecutor are able to participate in the conference and will obtain valuable information to aid our victims of domestic violence in the City of Sparks. The City Attorney's Office paid the funds up front to attend the training and the State is offering to reimburse the City Attorney's Office in the amount of $1,994.84 upon City Council approval.
Analysis: This grant award represents a cost-effective method to provide important training to the staff of the City Attorney’s Office.
Alternatives: The City Council may vote to reject the grant dollars and the check will need to be sent back to the State of Nevada while the City Attorney's Travel & Training budget will be reduced by the amount of $1,994.84.
Recommended Motion: I move to accept the grant of the State of Nevada Attorney General's Office in the amount of $1,994.84.
