There is one (1) vacancy on the Sparks Parks and Recreation Commission, to fill a partial term ending June 30, 2022.
Background:
The Recreational Commission was created by Ordinance No. 306, on May 11, 1953, and tasked with advising the City Council of recreational needs for the City of Sparks. In 1971, the name of the Commission was changed to the Sparks Parks and Recreation Commission (Ordinance No. 842). Sparks Municipal Code Chapter 2.12 outlines Commission membership, qualifications, and terms.
The board consists of nine (9) members:
- Seven (7) voting members appointed by the Mayor, each for 3-year terms
- Parks and Recreation Director, ex-officio, non-voting
- One (1) City Council member, non-voting
Members of the Sparks Parks and Recreation Commission must be residents of the City of Sparks or hold a valid Sparks business license at the time of appointment and at all times during their term of office.
Analysis:
This vacancy was created by the resignation of a Commissioner. The vacancy was advertised on January 25 and February 8, 2021, and applications were accepted until February 11, 2021.
Alternatives:
1. Council may approve the Mayor's appointment to the Commission.
2. Council may reject the Mayor's appointment to the Commission and provide further direction to the City Manager.
Recommended Motion:
I move to appoint _________________________ to the Sparks Parks and Recreation Commission for a partial term ending June 30, 2022.
