General Business: 9.2
A Business Impact Statement is not required because this is not a rule.
The Sparks Fire Department applied for - and was awarded - a Firehouse Subs grant for three (3) sets of Holmatro battery powered extrication combi tools. A combi tool is a tool that is able to both cut and spread. This newer technology will free up space on the engines because it is smaller and more compact. The open space will allow us to move some unsecured equipment out of the apparatus cab area. Moving the equipment out of the cab will make the cab area safer for the personnel, in case of an accident.
Background:
Sparks Fire Department last acquired new extrication equipment more than 10 years ago. The technological advances since that time have been tremendous. These tools are the first step in transitioning to the newest technology on the market. The constantly changing materials that make vehicles safer also makes them harder for the fire department to disassemble when needed. The acquired tools will be able to cut through the newest of metals being put into vehicles. The three new Holmatro tools will be placed on the engines that respond out of Station 2, Station 3, and Station 4. The tools will be placed into service when accepted by the Council and familiarization training has been completed through the fire department.
Analysis:
The $34,140 grant will allow the fire department to purchase three sets of Holmatro battery powered extrication tools for the engines at Station 2, Station 3, and Station 4.
Alternatives:
1. Council may accept the Firehouse Subs grant as recommended.
2. Council may reject the grant and provide further direction to the City Manager.
Recommended Motion:
I move to accept the $34,140 grant from Firehouse Subs.
