Agenda Item Brief:

The Sparks Police Department participates in the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) through the full time assignment of a Sparks Police detective in a local task force with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).  OCDETF authorizes reimbursement of overtime worked toward task force investigations.  OCDETF has authorized reimbursement of up to $5,000 for each of two investigations currently on-going for a total of up to $10,000.

Background:

The Sparks Police Department participates in a regional task force operated by the Drug Enforcement Administration.  This team works larger drug investigations in our area.  These investigations typically require more resources than local agencies can supply.  These investigations are often long term and many times involve interstate and/or international illegal drug shipments into our area.  There are numerous occasions where overtime is needed to complete these investigations.  The DEA provides overtime reimbursement funds to offset costs of our participation in these investigations.  The DEA, through the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force, authorized reimbursement for up to $5,000 each for two on-going investigations to the Sparks Police Department for a total of up to $10,000.

Analysis:

The Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDEFT) initiative allows for reimbursement of overtime to member(s) of the Sparks Police Department for their involvement in the Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force.

Alternatives:

The reimbursement authorizations can be denied.

Recommended Motion:

Accept the $10,000 distributed by the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task for the reimbursement of overtime.
