The State of Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety has offered the Sparks Police Department a grant in the amount of $118,000.00 to pay officer overtime costs to allow the Sparks Police Department to participate in the 2016 Joining Forces program. This program includes 16 special traffic enforcement events over the course of the Federal Fiscal Year concluding in September 2016.
Background:
For the past 12 years the Sparks Police Department has participated in the State of Nevada Office of Traffic Safety's Joining Forces program. This nation's award winning program focuses all of the State's participating law enforcement agencies on the same type of enforcement during the same period of time. Along with paid media advertising, each event is intended to raise public awareness and education about hazardous crash-causing driving behaviors that contribute to the fatal crashes in our state. Often these programs coincide with a national event i.e. "Click-it or Ticket" or "YOU DRINK, YOU DRIVE, YOU LOSE." This program has been credited with making a substantial contribution to the dramatic decrease in the fatal crash rate the State has experienced for the past several years.
Analysis:
The $118,000.00 grant will pay for approximately 2200 hours of officer overtime to conduct targeted traffic enforcement.
