Agenda Item Brief:

Equipment Services is requesting authorization to spend $93,734 for the purchase and installation of replacement dump beds on #512, and #514.

Background:

#512 and #514 are ten yard dump trucks that have been in our fleet since 1999. The cab and chassis on these trucks are in fair condition, but the beds and sander units are in poor condition. This agenda Item, if approved, will provide for the replacement of the beds and an upgrade to the hydraulic systems on these trucks. The purchase of the replacement sander units for these trucks was approved by Council on February 9, 2015.

By replacing the beds and sanders only, the City is saving approximately $160,000 per truck.

Analysis:

In sourcing these vehicles, if approved, the City would be using the joinder provision allowed under NRS 332.195. We will be purchasing these improvements by joining a bid provided to El Dorado County. Utilizing existing bids have historically been the most competitive. Utilizing the “joinder” provision allows the City to precisely define the equipment needed while foregoing the need to formally bid the item.

Alternatives:
  1. Council could approve this purchase as outlined by staff.
  2. Council could deny this purchase.
  3. Council could direct staff to provide alternatives to this purchase.

Recommended Motion:

I move to approve the purchase and replacement of two dump beds on two existing trucks from Tom’s House of Hydraulics in the amount of $93,734.
