Background:
The Mary Wahl Drain historically routed excess irrigation water back to the Truckee River. As farmland was developed the existing irrigation ditch facilities began to also be used for urban storm drainage. The Mary Wahl drainage system collects and conveys storm runoff from the western portion of Sparks, beginning as far north as Wildcreek Golf Course. The vast majority of the existing open ditch has been piped; however an open portion still exists within the industrial area of Sparks near the Truckee River. Piping of this section of ditch was identified as a recommended project by the City of Sparks Stormwater Basin Master Plan (Atkins, 2011). The project is included on the approved FY13/14 CIP.

Project design and easement acquisition were completed for this project in FY 13/14. No discrepancies were noted in the bids received. Q&D Construction was the low bidder at $680,860. The engineer’s estimate for this project was $650,000.
