Agenda Item Brief: The purpose of this item is to provide an update to the City Council regarding the efforts to educate local businesses on how best to market their goods/services to the City of Sparks and other local government agencies.

Background: At the City Council Workshop held in November of 2012, there was a general discussion on how local businesses might be helped in the current economic environment. While the concept of purchasing preferences is often discussed, outreach and education of the business community was identified as an area that would benefit those businesses.

Analysis: The presentation offered under this subject will provide an outline of the materials that have been offered to the business community in the last 12 months on the subject of how to market goods/services to government, especially in light of changing law. These sessions included: SBA – How to Do Business with the City of Sparks (1/10/13) – Handouts attached AGC – New Rules for Bidding Public Works (5/10/12) Education on the subject of doing business with the City of Sparks is available at any time as sales calls are made. Going forward, organized classes will continue to be offered utilizing the marketing strength of the SBA, the Chamber and others and courses will be held wherever they make logistical sense for the audience. The next organized class will likely be delayed until the 2013 Legislative Session is completed as the new laws will certainly affect the information being offered.
