Agenda Item Brief: The Spanish Springs Home Depot, along with Kidde Smoke Alarms and the National Fire Protection Association is donating 2,500 10-Year smoke alarm to the Sparks Fire Department Project SAFE Residential Smoke Alarm Program.
Background: On December 8, 2012, the Home Depot, Kidde, and the National Fire Protection Association donated 2,500 10-Year smoke alarms to the Sparks Fire Department Project SAFE Residential Smoke Alarm Program. This donation is part of a 50,000-unit nationwide giveaway of $1 million worth of smoke alarms. Kidde and the Home Depot also will make a $25,000 contribution to the National Firefighters Foundation's "Be a Hero, Save a Hero" initiative. The contribution coincides with the launch of the nationwide public service campaign about the program, which urges homeowners to install smoke alarms in all sleeping rooms and centrally located in the hallway.
Analysis: The donation of 2,500 10-Year smoke alarms from Home Depot will enable the Sparks Fire Department to continue efforts to provide and install smoke alarms in City of Sparks homes through the Project SAFE Residential Smoke Alarm Program, without having to compete for a federal grant.
Alternatives: Council could decide not to accept the smoke alarm donation.
Recommended Motion: Accept the donation of 2,500 10-Year smoke alarms from the Spanish Springs Home Depot.
