Agenda Item Brief: The State of Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Criminal Justice Assistance has made available to the Sparks Police Department a grant in the amount $61,585 to initiate a regional license plate reading system for criminal justice purposes.
Background: License plate reading technology has improved tremendously over the past decade. The systems available now can enable a law enforcement agency to very efficiently locate vehicles suspected to be involved in criminal activity or for other reasons such as an Amber Alert. The system to be used connects to a nationwide database that can help detectives locate vehicles involved in crime in our area that leave for other regions. A vehicle can be "loaded" into the system and the agency notified immediately when it is encountered.
Analysis: This is a regional effort between the Sparks Police Department, Reno Police Department and the Washoe County Sheriff's Office. The City of Sparks will act as the fiscal agent for purposes of this grant.
Alternatives: The Sparks Police Department could seek funding elsewhere for this project.
Recommended Motion: Accept a justice assistance grant in the amount of $61,585.00
