Agenda Item Brief:

After an election occurs, the City Council reviews and revises appointments to the City's various boards and commissions. Election results were canvassed on November 16, 2020, so revising appointments to City boards and commissions is now appropriate.

Background:

Councilwoman Dian Vanderwell was appointed to the City Council on September 14, 2020, and is not currently appointed to any City boards and commissions as a member of the City Council. An election was held on November 3, 2020, during which City Council seats for Wards 1 and 3 were contested. The election results were canvassed and declared official on November 16, 2020. In addition, positions held by the late Mayor Ron Smith have not been reassigned.

Given these changes and election results, a review and potential reassignment of positions on City boards and commissions is appropriate.

Analysis:

A list of each Councilmember's current appointments, as well as the positions still assigned to the late Mayor Smith, is attached.

Reassigning City boards and commissions positions will follow a three-step process:

1. Councilmembers will each review their appointments and keep those positions they want while removing others to the "parking lot."

2. Once all Councilmembers have placed appointments into the "parking lot," the positions in the "parking lot" will be tentatively reassigned.

3. After all positions have been tentatively reassigned, the City Council will vote on the tentative list of reassignments.

Alternatives:

The City Council may direct any changes in assignments to boards and commissions as desired, and/or provide further direction to the City Manager.

Recommended Motion:

I move to approve the City Council appointments to City boards and commissions.
