Agenda Item Brief: Acceptance of this donation to Partners in Parks and Recreation will enable the Sparks Parks and Recreation Department to continue the Junior Giants Baseball program for children.
Background: The Partners in Parks and Recreation program was implemented in 2008 to encourage support from individuals, businesses and service organization to help develop and maintain parks and recreation facilities and programs. Donation levels include the following: Giving Circle $1,000 and above, Benefactor $500 to $999, Supporter $250 to $499, and Friend $35 to $249. Donors receive special recognition throughout the year, including acknowledgement on the city’s web site and in the Parks and Recreation seasonal activity guides. Due to the impact of budget cuts over the past few years, the program has proved to be a key resource in the continuation of recreational opportunities with limited revenue generation such as the Junior Giants program for youth.
Analysis: This is the fourth consecutive year the Sertoma Club of Sparks has donated funds to Partners in Parks and Recreation in order to make the Junior Giants Baseball program available to children. The program was canceled in 2009 due to budget cuts and without this continued support it would not be offered. Junior Giants gives boys and girls, ages 7 to 11, the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of baseball with an emphasis on teamwork, sportsmanship and skills. In 2011, 90 children participated in the program. Approximately 95% of participants are from a low to moderately low income area of Sparks.
Alternatives: The Council may elect not to accept this donation and discontinue the Junior Giants Program.
Recommended Motion: I move to accept the $1,000.00 donation to Partners in Parks and Recreation.
