Agenda Item Brief:

The State of Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety has offered the Sparks Police Department a grant in the amount of $46,000.00 to pay for officer overtime costs to allow the Sparks Police Department to participate in the 2020 Joining Forces program. This program includes 16 special traffic enforcement events over the course of the Federal Fiscal Year, concluding in September 2020.

Background:

For the past 16 years, the Sparks Police Department has participated in the State of Nevada Office of Traffic Safety's Joining Forces program. This national award winning program focuses the State's participating agencies on cooperative enforcement during predetermined traffic enforcement events. Each event is intended to raise public awareness and education about hazardous driving behaviors and patterns that contribute to fatal crashes throughout the state. Often coinciding with broader national events such as "Click-it or Ticket," and "U Drive. U Text. U Pay.," this program has been credited with making a substantial contribution to the dramatic decrease in the State of Nevada's fatal crash rate the past several years.

Analysis:

The $46,000.00 grant will pay for approximately 824 hours of officer overtime to conduct targeted traffic enforcement.

Alternatives:

1. Council could accept the grant and participate in the State of Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety 2020 Joining Forces program.

2. Council could reject the grant award and seek funding elsewhere.

Recommended Motion:

I move to accept the $46,000.00 grant from the State of Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic and Safety, and participate in the 2020 Joining Forces program.
