Agenda Item Brief:

The State of Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety has offered the Sparks Police Department a grant in the amount of $45,000.00 to pay for officer overtime costs to allow the Sparks Police Department to participate in the 2017 Joining Forces project.  This program includes 20 special traffic enforcement events over the course of the Federal Fiscal Year, concluding in September, 2017.

Background:

For the past 13 years, the Sparks Police Department has participated in the State of Nevada Office of Traffic Safety's Joining Forces program.  This national award winning program focuses all of the State's participating agencies on the same type of enforcement during the same period of time.  Along with paid media advertising, each event is intended to raise public awareness and education about hazardous crash-causing driving behaviors that contribute to the fatal crashes in this state.  Often these programs coincide with national events, i.e., "Click-it or Ticket" or "You Drink, You Drive, You Lose."  This program has been credited with making a substantial contribution to the dramatic decrease in the fatal crash rate the State has experienced for the past several years.

Analysis:

The $45,000.00 grant will pay for approximately 794 hours of officer overtime to conduct targeted traffic enforcement.

Alternatives:

The Council can elect to reject the Traffic Safety Grant grant award in the amount of $45,000.00 and seek funding elsewhere.

Recommended Motion:

I move to accept the $45,000 grant from the State of Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety to participate in the 2017 Joining Forces project.
