Each year, the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) offers a MCSAP High Priority Grant Program to local agencies to improve Commercial Motor Carrier Vehicle safety to create a safer street community where passenger vehicles respect commercial vehicles and where commercial vehicles operated safely thereby reducing accidents and fatalities.  The Sparks Police Department entered into an agreement with the Reno Police Department to collaboratively engage in large vehicle inspection activities and traffic enforcement initiatives that focus on increased traffic safety in work zones and for those engaged in distracting activities while driving.  The Reno Police Department was successful in securing the funds and will be responsible for required reporting.  The City of Reno approved the grant on August 10, 2016; the grant award is scheduled to be formally accepted at Reno's City Council meeting on October 12, 2016.  A copy of the interlocal agreement and the grant award documents are attached for your infomation.

The grant award of $14,490 will allow trained and qualified officers to work overtime with a concentration on large truck violations that may endanger others.

The city can elect to decline the grant funds.

I move to approve the interlocal agreement with the City of Reno for the management and disposition of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration High Priority Grant Program (MCSAP) in the amount of $14,490.
