Agenda Item Brief:

The U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is offering a MCSAP High Priority Grant Program to the Reno Police Department and to the Sparks Police Department in the amount of $12,035 for the purpose of conducting vehicle inspections and traffic enforcement activities that focus on large trucks in work zones and large truck drivers who may be distracted.

Background:

Each year, The U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) offers a MCSAP High Priority Grant Program to local agencies to improve Commercial Motor Carrier Vehicle safety to create a safer street community where passenger vehicles respect commercial vehicles and where commercial vehilcles are operated safely thereby reducing accidents and fatalities. The Sparks Police Department entered into an agreement with the Reno Police Department to collaboratively engage in large vehicle inspection activities and traffic enforcment initiatives that focus on increased traffic safety in work zones and for those that are engaged in distracting activities while driving. Reno Police Department was successful in securing the funds and will be responsible for required reporting. A copy of the grant is attached for your information.

Analysis:

The grant award of $12,035 will allow trained and qualified officers to work overtime with a concentration on large truck violations that may endanger others.

Alternatives:

The city can elect to decline the grant funds.

Recommended Motion:

I move to approvet the interlocal agreement with the City of Reno for the management and disposition of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration High Priority Grant Program (MCSAP) in the amount of $12,035.
