Agenda Item Brief: 2013 Hometowne Christmas Parade Winners

Background: The 27th annual Sparks Hometowne Christmas Parade was held with outside temperatures between 13 and 29 degrees after a snow fall of 3 to 5 inches. In the final days before the event, city phone lines were active with calls inquiring on whether it was going to be cancelled or postponed. The 2012 parade was postponed one week to allow for city personnel (fire, roads, and police) to be available for a flood that was forecasted for the same weekend. In 26 years, the parade has gone on in snow, rain, wind, extreme cold and beautiful sunny skies! The morning of the parade, the Public Works Department began clearing snow on the streets and sidewalks at 3:00 AM. They had snow clearing equipment ready if needed during the parade. For this reason, all participants should be commended for their perseverance in the extreme weather.
