Agenda Item Brief: This agenda item allows the Mayor and City Council to publicly support and encourage the Nevada Department of Transportation and all applicable parties to select the future extension of the north-south portion of I-11 to connect through the Sparks/Reno region.

Background: The Arizona and Nevada Departments of Transportation are working together on the two-year Interstate 11 (I-11) and Intermountain West Corridor Study. Congress recognized the importance of the portion of the Corridor between Phoenix and Las Vegas and designated it as future I-11 in the recent transportation authorization bill, Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21). The study includes detailed corridor planning of a possible high priority interstate link between Phoenix and Las Vegas, and high-level visioning for potentially extending the corridor north to Canada and south to Mexico. The next study phase includes the north-south connectivity through Nevada and beyond. Five different routes are being analyzed through the heart of Nevada from east to west. This Resolution will allow the Mayor and City Council to publicly support connectivity through the Sparks/Reno and Truckee Meadows Region.

Alternatives: The City Council could decide not to support the Resolution.

Recommended Motion: I move to endorse Resolution No. 3247 and support Interstate 11 and any future north-south extension be constructed through the Sparks/Reno and Truckee Meadows Region.
