Agenda Item Brief:

Sparks City Charter 1.110 requires every person appointed to an elected office in the city be administered the official Oath of Office.

Mayor Lawson's appointment and confirmation by the City Council of a new Sparks Councilmember for Ward 2 requires the taking of the official Oath of Office prior to assuming the duties of a Councilmember.

Background:

Per Sparks City Charter 1.070

(2) A Vacancy in the office of the Mayor must be filled by the Mayor pro tempore. The resulting vacancy in the City Council must be filled as provided in subsection 1.

and

Sparks City Charter 1.110

Every person elected or appointed under the provisions of sections 1.060 to 1.090, inclusive, shall subscribe to the offical oath as provided by the City Council.

Analysis:

The Honorable Barbara McCarthy will administer the Oath of Office Dian VanderWell, the newly appointed Councilmember for Ward 2.
