Agenda Item Brief:

The Reno-Sparks SCHEELS Sporting Goods Store (SCHEELS) has selected the Sparks Police Department to receive a $7,000 private cash donation as part of the store's 2017 gift giving.

Background:

SCHEELS is a 27-store operation that is employee-owned with stores in 12 states including North Dakota, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, Montana, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Nevada, Kansas, Colorado and Utah.  The Reno-Sparks SCHEELS opened in 2008 in Sparks, Nevada and was marketed as the World's Largest All Sports Store.

SCHEELS is active in national and local community partnerships and donates more than 10% of its profits to local charities and local non-profit organizations.  In addition to community outreach and volunteerism SCHEELS supports quality education and athletic programs, conservation and social services and health programs.

SCHEELS  has established and maintained an active and positive working relationship with the Sparks Police Department since it's opening. SCHEELS has offered a one-time private donation to the Sparks Police Department in the amount of $7,000.

Analysis:

The $7,000 donation will be used to further the Sparks Police Department's operational mission to support officers in critical incidents with the purchase of several AR-15 rifles.

Alternatives:

The Council can elect to reject the $7000 private donation from SCHEELS.

Recommended Motion:

I move to accept the private donation in the amount of $7,000 from the Reno-Sparks SCHEELS.
