Title: Consideration, review and possible acceptance of a grant from the Union Pacific Foundation for $5,000.

Recommendation: For the City Council to accept the grant from the Union Pacific Foundation.

Agenda Item Brief:

Acceptance of this grant will enable Sparks Parks and Recreation department to purchase equipment to be used for special events.

Background:

The City of Sparks hosts over 14 events in Victorian Square. The city's goal of hosting events serves 3 objectives: to encourage economic development, promote tourism and stimulate civic pride. Nearly half of these events are fundraisers produced by non-profit organizations. All of which are gifts to the community.

Analysis:

Each event held in downtown Sparks has many costs associated to it, from decorations to entertainment to portable restrooms. By adding some logistical portion for the venue the City of Sparks can provide this benefit to all the downtown events and positively offset their bottom line.

The funds requested will be used to help the producers offset the costs of events by adding logistical elements such as portable restrooms and barricades.

Alternatives:

1. The Council may elect not to accept this grant.

Recommended Motion:

I move to accept this grant from Union Pacific Foundation in the amount of $5,000 to purchase equipment as outlined by staff.
