Agenda Item Brief: At the City Council Workshop on May 27, 2014, staff presented proposed changes to the city's sign code (S.M.C. 20.56). Included in the discussion were changes related to how the city intends to regulate digital signs.
While working on the Code Amendment, staff was introduced to Mr. Ian White from WatchFire Signs (www.watchfiresigns.com). Mr. White offered to do a demonstration on the operation of digital signs, including hold time, brightness, and modes of operation.
At the City Council Workshop, staff proposed to take advantage of Mr. White's offer.
Background: Currently, the city has limited regulations regarding the use and operation of digital signs. A number of years ago, staff was directed by the City Council to move forward with amendments to the city's sign code to address digital signs and make other changes to help simplify the code for both applicants and the city. A proposed Ordinance addressing these items has been reviewed by the Planning Commission, who has forwarded a recommendation of approval to the City Council. It is anticipated the proposed Code Amendment will be presented to the City Council for adoption on the August 11, 2014 City Council meeting.
