Title: Consideration and possible approval of appointing member to the Tourism and Marketing Committee.

Recommendation: That Council appoint a new member to the Tourism and Marketing Committee.

Agenda Item Brief: Committee appointment.

Background: Senate Bill 477 from the 1999 legislative session created the Tourism & Marketing Committee consisting of “(a) Two members of the City Council of the City of Sparks, appointed by the City Council of the City of Sparks.” and “(b) One member who is a member of the Nevada Resort Association who represents a property in the City of Sparks, appointed by the City Council of the City of Sparks from a list submitted by the Nevada Resort Association.” Current members of the Tourism & Marketing Committee are Council Members Ron Schmitt and Ron Smith. Due to the sale of the J.A. Nugget Hotel and Casino in December of 2013, Stephen Ascuaga, formerly COO for the Nugget, is no longer eligible to serve on the Tourism and Marketing Committee. The secretary to the Tourism and Marketing Committee wrote the Nevada Resort Association to obtain a list of appointees to the committee, and they responded by recommending the appointment of David Zamarin, Executive Vice President of Marketing of the J.A. Nugget Hotel and Casino Resort.

Analysis: This committee is formulated by State law, this action will allow them to continue to do business.

Alternatives: Council can provide direction to staff.

Recommended Motion: I move to appoint David Zamarin as the member of the Nevada Resort Association who represents a property in the City of Sparks to the Tourism and Marketing Committee.
