A Business Impact Statement is not required because this is not a rule.
Agenda Item Brief: Adoption of the Resolution will support an effort in the region for the School districts effort in securing $30-40 million dollars in federal grant funding.
Background: The WCSD has asked the City to show support for their request for the Race to the Top district competition. The competition is to build on the lessons learned from the State competitions conducted under the Race to the Top program and to support bold, locally directed improvements in learning and teaching that will directly improve student achievement and educator effectiveness. Attached to this report is the 22 page executive summary provided by the school district.
Analysis: Voting for the resolution will help the school district with their request. Having both of the cities within Washoe County providing resolutions will fulfill one of the requirements from the U.S. Department of Education.
Alternatives: 1. City Council could adopt the resolution as outlined by staff. 2. City Council could reject the resolution and provide direction to the City Manager.
Recommended Motion: I move to adopt Resolution No. 3246 to support the Washoe County School District's request to the U.S. Department of Education’s FY 2013 “RACE TO THE TOP” grant program.
